We nervously sat in our dad’s living room one afternoon in 2016, uncertain how he would react to what we were about to ask him. The man who murdered our mother 50 years before, and got away with it, had recently died in prison for another crime he’d committed, but we felt there was unfinished business. We made small talk at first, stalling for the courage to get to the point. We glanced back and forth at each other and finally, when we could stall no more, we got to the point. “Dad”, we said, “we want to have a book written to tell the story of what happened to us. And, we want to start a non-profit in mom’s name to help other crime victims”. It was a lot to throw at him and we were relieved, and excited, when he graciously agreed. In 2018, the first ask was completed with the publication of “Slaying in South St. Louis” by Vicki Berger-Erwin and Bryan Erwin. The book brilliantly affirms that justice was denied our family. One of the unexpected outcomes of the book was we learned much, much more about our Aunt Jo, mom’s sister, and her fight to influence the Missouri legislature to update the juvenile justice code on our mom’s behalf. We realized that any non-profit we formed must honor both mom and Aunt Jo. Their maiden name was “Love” and as a result, Love Sisters Project was born.
Lovesisters.org is here! We are excited to launch Lovesisters.org as the next step in fulfilling our promise to dad. We experienced our mother’s murder as young children and Love Sisters Project focuses on helping kids as a result. Our video (LINK) further explains the genesis of Love Sisters Project. The video was produced for a church and has a Christian slant. However, we are not a religious organization, although our faith guides us.
Our Vision! We want to help kids in simple ways and see where small gestures of kindness take us. We support Annie’s Hope, an organization in the St. Louis area dedicated to help kids who are grieving the loss of someone in their life. We also provide disadvantaged kids attending their camps with duffel bags. Many of these kids bring their clothes and essentials in garbage bags. A future blog will highlight the wonderful mission of Annie’s Hope. We are looking to provide activity bags to kids who have to go to court to help them pass the time and calm their nerves when in the witness room, starting with Boone County.
Thank you! We extend a big thank-you to Tyler Gramke for developing this website and Sarah Berger, who is guiding us on our social media strategy. Kyle Zanone will be taking over website modification for future changes.
You are Invited! We invite you to join us on our journey to help kids whose lives have been touched by crime and find meaningful ways to let them know they are not alone. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter at:
